Amy Johnson grew up in Batavia, and earned a degree in criminal justice from Illinois State University. She thought she would become an attorney, but after an internship experience with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, she was hooked on policing. She worked her way through most areas of responsibility in the Sheriff’s Office and became the first woman to serve and undersheriff when she received that post in 2023, Sheriff Ron Hain is not standing for reelection, and is assisting in Johnson’s campaign.
